Active matrix is a type of addressing scheme used in flat panel displays. In this method of switching individual elements (pixels), each pixel is attached to a transistor and capacitoractively maintaining the pixel state while other pixels are being addressed, in contrast with the older passive matrix technology in which each pixel must maintain its state passively, without being driven by circuitry.
What is the difference between an 'Active Matrix, TFT LCD' and an 'a-si TFT/TN'? Is one a better technology than another? I'm trying to decide which of these two monitors I'd like to purchase::arrow. The active matrix technology was invented by Bernard J. Lechner at RCA[1] and first demonstrated as a feasible device using thin-film transistors (TFTs) by T. Peter Brody and his Thin-Film Devices department at Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1974, and the term was introduced into the literature in 1975.[2][3][4]
Given an m × n matrix, the number of connectors needed to address the display is m + n (just like in passive matrix technology). Each pixel is attached to a switch-device, which actively maintains the pixel state while other pixels are being addressed, also preventing crosstalk from inadvertently changing the state of an unaddressed pixel. The most common switching devices use TFTs, i.e. a FET based on either the cheaper non-crystallinethin-filmsilicon (a-Si), polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si), or CdSesemiconductor material.
A driver is designed for video playing in active matrix electrowetting displays. The active matrix TFT is therefore essential for the driving system. The backplane pixel was characterized by grounding the source of the driver TFT. Chapter 4: Active Matrix OLED Arrays with a-Si:H TFT. Active Matrix OLED Using.

The sequel to 2003's Call of Duty, winner of over 80 Game of the Year awards, Call of Duty 2 offers more immense, more intense, more realistic battles than ever before, thanks to the stunning visuals of the new COD2 engine. Beautifully rendered snow, rain, fog, and smoke, combined with dynamic lighting and shadows, make this the most intense WWII shooter yet.
Another variant is to use diodes or resistors, but neither diodes (e.g. Metal insulator metal diodes), nor non-linear voltage dependent resistors (i.e. varistors) are currently used with the latter not yet economical, compared to TFT.

The Macintosh Portable (1989) was perhaps the first consumer laptop to employ an active matrix panel. Today, virtually all TVs, computer monitors and smartphone screens that use LCD or OLED technology employ active matrix technology.[5]
